Forget the futuristic smart house. These five gadgets solve problems we actually have now. “Smart home” can make it sound as though we’re supposed to turn our houses into something out of The Jetsons.
A refrigerator that talks to the oven. Blinds that know when the sun is setting. A washing machine that sends your phone a message because apparently we’ve reached the point where even the laundry wants to text us. Some of that is fun.
But at Geezers, Gadgets and Gizmos, we’re much more interested in a simpler question:
Does this thing actually make everyday life easier?
Because the best smart-home technology isn’t necessarily the gadget with the longest feature list. It’s the one that solves a real problem.

So for this week’s Geezers, Gadgets and Gizmos Gadget Desk, we’re looking at five pieces of smart-home technology that earn their place by doing something genuinely useful.
1. Ring Battery Doorbell 2K

The problem: “Who’s at the door?”
There was a time when finding out who was at the front door involved an extremely sophisticated piece of technology: You got up and looked.
A video doorbell changes that. The Ring Battery Doorbell 2K lets you see who’s at the door from your phone, receive motion alerts and talk with someone outside using two-way audio. The 2026 model provides 2K video and a head-to-toe view that can also be useful for seeing packages left near the door. That’s useful whether you’re upstairs, cooking dinner, relaxing in the backyard—or simply don’t feel like jumping up every time the doorbell rings.
And because this version uses a rechargeable battery, it doesn’t necessarily require the wiring associated with a traditional doorbell installation. Ring says it can also be connected to compatible existing doorbell wiring for trickle charging.
Why it makes sense: You can see who’s there before deciding whether you need to answer the door.
That’s not futuristic technology. That’s convenience.
2. Kasa Smart Plug with Energy Monitoring (KP125M)

The problem: The lamp you forgot to turn off.
This might be our favorite example of how a little bit of technology can solve a little everyday annoyance. A smart plug goes between your electrical outlet and whatever you’ve plugged into it. That’s it. But suddenly an ordinary lamp can be controlled from your phone, placed on a schedule or—in a compatible smart-home setup—turned on and off with your voice.
The Kasa KP125 supports remote control, scheduling, timers, energy monitoring and voice control through services including Alexa, Siri and Google Home.
- Imagine the lamp across the room that you always have to get up to turn off.
- Or the living-room light you’d like to come on automatically every evening.
- Maybe that moment after you’ve left home when you wonder:
Did I turn that lamp off? A smart plug can handle all three.
Why it makes sense
You don’t have to make your entire house smart. You can make one outlet smart. And that may be all you need.
3. Philips Hue White and Color Ambiance Smart Light Starter Kit

The problem: The light switch isn’t always where you are.
Smart lighting can sound like one of those things invented primarily so somebody can make their living room purple. And yes, you can certainly do that. But there’s a much more practical side to it.
Imagine walking toward a dark room and turning the lights on before you enter it. Or dimming the bedroom lights without getting out of bed. Perhaps having certain lights come on automatically every evening.
A Philips Hue starter kit gives you smart bulbs plus a Hue Bridge. Depending on the kit and setup, Hue supports app control, schedules, automations and voice control through major smart-home systems. Philips currently offers A19 starter kits with the Bridge included.
That can turn something as ordinary as lighting into something noticeably more convenient.
Why it makes sense
Good lighting becomes increasingly important around stairs, hallways and other areas where you don’t want to be fumbling for a switch in the dark. And sometimes the most useful smart-home command may also be one of the simplest: “Turn on the living-room lights.”
4. ecobee Smart Thermostat Essential

The problem: Stop walking down the hall because you’re cold.
Thermostats have come a long way from the little round dial on the wall.
The ecobee Smart Thermostat Essential lets you adjust your home’s temperature from its touchscreen or through the ecobee app, set schedules and manage heating and cooling when you’re away from home. It also works with major smart-home ecosystems, including Alexa, Apple Home and Google Assistant.
There can be an energy benefit as well. ecobee says the Essential can save up to 23% on annual heating and cooling costs, although actual savings will naturally depend on the home, climate, system and how you use it.
But we’re equally interested in the everyday convenience. You’re sitting comfortably in your chair and suddenly decide it’s chilly. You don’t necessarily have to go anywhere.
Comfort shouldn’t require a trip to the thermostat every time the temperature changes.
There is one important caveat. Smart thermostats aren’t a one-size-fits-all purchase. Heating and cooling systems vary, and some installations may require additional equipment. ecobee provides a compatibility checker specifically for determining whether a thermostat will work with a particular system.
So this is one product where we’d say:
Check compatibility before you click Buy.
5. Amazon Echo Dot

The problem: Do we really need another app?
Here’s where the other gadgets start working together. You can control smart-home products from your phone. But that means finding your phone. Unlocking it. Locating and opening the app. Finding the device. And tapping the right button.
Sometimes there’s an easier interface: Your voice.
With compatible smart-home devices connected to Alexa, an Echo Dot can let you say things such as:
- “Alexa, turn on the living-room light.”
- “Alexa, turn off the bedroom lamp.”
And depending upon your compatible thermostat and setup:
- “Alexa, set the temperature to 70 degrees.”
The fifth-generation Echo Dot remains widely sold, and its smart-home capabilities include controlling compatible devices and routines.
Why it makes sense
Voice control can take some of the complexity out of smart-home technology. Instead of learning another screen, menu or app, you ask for what you want. That’s the kind of technology we like.
You Don’t Need a “Smart Home”
Here’s perhaps the most important point in this week’s Gadget Desk: You don’t need all five of these.
- You don’t need a hub in every room.
- It’snot necessary to replace perfectly good appliances because somebody put the word SMART on the box.
- And you certainly don’t need technology simply for the sake of having more technology.
Instead, start with the problem:
Do you wish you could see who’s at the door without immediately answering it? A video doorbell might make sense.
Is there a lamp that’s always inconvenient to reach? Try a smart plug.
Would you like lights on before you walk into a dark room? Smart lighting might be useful.
Are you constantly adjusting the temperature? Perhaps a smart thermostat earns its place.
Would you rather simply ask your house to do some of these things than reach for your phone? That’s where voice control becomes interesting.
The point is to make your home work better for you.
Before You Buy
Smart-home products depend on things such as Wi-Fi, apps, accounts, compatible devices and, in some cases, subscriptions. That’s worth considering before buying. A gadget that saves you 30 seconds every day isn’t particularly useful if setting it up makes you want to throw it through the window.
So our rule is simple:
Technology should earn its place in your home.
If it makes something easier, safer, more comfortable or more convenient, we’re interested. If it merely gives you another password to remember? Maybe not.
