Garrisongs

What if navigation didn’t interrupt you?

Traditional GPS systems rely on abrupt spoken prompts to direct drivers:

“Turn left in 500 feet.”

The interruption is intentional. Modern navigation systems are designed to “snap” a driver’s attention back at key moments.

But what if navigation guidance could remain continuously present within the driving experience instead of repeatedly interrupting it?

That question led to the development of Garrisongs™ — a patent-pending concept exploring a new approach to navigation guidance.

Rather than interrupting drivers with spoken prompts, Garrisongs™ translates navigation instructions into rhythmic or lyrical audio cues blended into a continuous music experience.

What Is Garrisongs™?

Garrisongs™ is not a music app.

It is a proposed new “delivery layer” for navigation guidance.

Instead of replacing existing navigation systems, Garrisongs™ is designed to integrate with current navigation platforms and transform how navigation guidance is experienced.

In the Garrisongs™ model:

  • Navigation instructions become part of the listening experience
  • Guidance remains continuously present instead of repeatedly interrupting the driver
  • Audio cues can be expressed rhythmically or lyrically
  • Drivers could potentially select different music styles or genres
  • The overall experience is designed to feel integrated rather than disruptive

The goal is not to eliminate navigation prompts.

The goal is to explore whether navigation guidance can exist in a more continuous, less interruptive form.

The Big Question

Current navigation systems generally assume:

Attention drops and needs to be pulled back.

That’s why spoken prompts are intentionally abrupt.

Garrisongs™ explores a different possibility:

What if guidance could remain continuously present instead?

Rather than relying on repeated interruption, the concept explores whether a more integrated guidance experience could reduce the need for attention to “drop and recover” in the first place.

This is not a claim.

It is a design question — one that would ultimately require real-world testing across different driving environments, trip lengths, and guidance styles.

How It Works

Garrisongs™ is designed as an overlay experience.

Instead of replacing navigation systems like Waze, Google Maps, or automotive navigation platforms, the concept is intended to sit between navigation data and audio output.

Navigation instructions — including:

  • direction
  • timing
  • distance
  • turn sequence

— are translated into structured audio cues that can be blended into a continuous music experience.

Rather than hearing a voice abruptly interrupt the experience, guidance becomes part of the flow itself.

The system is not tied to a single fixed song library.

The audio experience could potentially be:

  • dynamically generated
  • style-based
  • genre-driven
  • route-aware
  • context-sensitive

Think of it less like selecting individual songs and more like selecting the style or tone of the navigation experience.

Would It Work For Every Drive?

Probably not in the exact same way.

One of the most interesting questions surrounding Garrisongs™ is whether different types of drives may require different types of guidance behavior.

For example:

  • Short drives may benefit from a lighter, more integrated experience
  • Complex routes may require stronger emphasis at key moments
  • Long-distance driving may require different attention dynamics altogether
  • Familiar routes may feel different than unfamiliar ones

This is part of what makes Garrisongs™ a design space rather than a fixed behavior.

The concept may ultimately work best as:

  • a selectable mode
  • a configurable experience layer
  • or a context-sensitive guidance option

rather than a universal replacement for all navigation behavior.

Why This Concept Emerged

Garrisongs™ emerged from a lifelong intersection of:

  • media production
  • storytelling
  • audio production
  • consumer behavior
  • marketing psychology
  • and user experience thinking

Garrison Leykam previously worked as a record producer and recording engineer for London Records and holds a PhD in Marketing.

The concept grew out of a simple observation:

We’ve accepted interruption as the default language of navigation.

Garrisongs™ asks whether there may be another way.

Current Status

Garrisongs™ is currently:

  • Patent Pending
  • In exploratory development
  • Being discussed with professionals connected to navigation, mapping, and automotive user experience

The concept is still early-stage and highly exploratory.

No claims are being made regarding safety or driving performance.

The core idea is simply this:

Navigation guidance may not need to feel like an interruption.

Looking Ahead

The future of navigation may not just be about:

  • faster routes
  • cleaner maps
  • or smarter algorithms

It may also be about:

how guidance feels.

Garrisongs™ is an exploration of whether navigation can become part of the experience instead of repeatedly breaking it.
